What It Actually Costs to Study in Japan from Nepal

What It Actually Costs to Study in Japan from Nepal

One of the first questions every student asks is simple: what will this actually cost? Here is an honest breakdown.

Tuition: ¥800,000 – ¥1,000,000 per year. This is the range for Japanese language schools. The exact figure depends on the school and the region.

Living costs: ¥70,000 – ¥120,000 per month. This covers rent, food, transport, utilities and daily expenses. Costs sit at the higher end in Tokyo and the lower end in regional cities.

Initial cost: flight plus setup. On top of tuition and living costs, budget for your airfare and the one-off expenses of settling in — initial shopping, and the setup you need in your first weeks.

Part-time work helps, but it is not a plan on its own. Student visa holders in Japan may work up to 28 hours per week. That income genuinely helps with living costs, and we support students in finding part-time work after arrival. What it does not do is cover your tuition and your first year's costs from a standing start. Japanese immigration expects you to demonstrate funds before you arrive, not to rely on income you have not yet earned.

What you must show on paper. For a student visa you need financial sponsor documents, a bank statement and balance certificate. These are reviewed carefully, and how they are presented matters as much as the amount.

A note on the Yomiuri Scholarship. If the financial requirement is the main barrier for you, the Yomiuri News Scholarship is worth considering. Students work at a newspaper distribution company that covers school tuition under the scholarship agreement, and accommodation is provided as a free private room. It requires real discipline — the work schedule is demanding — but it removes the sponsor and bank-balance requirement entirely.

Bring your documents to a free counseling session and we will tell you honestly where you stand.
